Penha Longa Golf

Based in Sintra, Lisbon

The Penha Longa Golf Resort forms part of a protected landscape. Quinta da Penha Longa is a relevant historical site because the first monastery of the Order of St. Jerome was built there in 1355. During the past 600 years, many buildings have been constructed in Penha Longa, such as the Palace, the Church and other sites which can be seen on the two golf courses (the 18 hole Atlantic Course and the 9 hole Monastery Course).

The architect designed the Penha Longa Golf Courses to best take account of the steeply sloping terrain and excellent views across the Sintra mountains to the sea beyond. With bold drives, courageous approaches and artful greens, all 27 holes are both an adrenalin rush and a soothing journey through one of Portugal's most inspiring landscapes.

Penha Longa Golf Resort offers 3 different circuits; The 18 hole Atlantic Championship Course, Atlantic South (made up of the back 9 of the Atlantic Championship Course and the 9 hole Monastery Course) and Atlantic North (made up of the front 9 of the Atlantic Championship Course and the 9 hole Monastery Course).

The 18 hole Atlantic Course runs over gently wooded hills and has a superb flow to it. The Course offers interesting water hazards, many doglegs, some elevated greens and added to this is the challenge of the strong winds that sometimes occur. Every hole is different and exciting and this course has to be played with respect for its architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. who has created a golf course, using the contours to great effect that demands skill from the most experienced golfers.

The opening holes and the final flourish of the Atlantic Championship Course are laid out in a valley wooden with pines and studded with granite outcrops in the shadow of the rocky mountains, while others arc and plunge over scented hillsides. The 6th to 13th holes have been built on a hill offering extensive views over the Sintra Cascais region.

The 9 hole Monastery Course also designed by Robert Trent Jones compliments its sister Course extremely well. The Monastery Course is less undulating than the Penha Longa Atlantico and offers a moderate challenge which will suit all levels of players. Some of the main difficulties of the Monastery Course are fast greens and narrow fairways. Some interesting holes are the 4th - close to an ancient monastery, the 5th and the 8th where lakes give a special beauty along with the Sintra mountains. Not forgetting hole 9, with a lovely view over the Penha Longa Palace.

This course spreads around the historical heart of the Resort and is the perfect complement to The Atlantic Course, ideal for guests who arrive in the late afternoon but who would still like to play a great round of golf.

The Penha Longa Golf course opened in 1992 and was designed by Robert Trent Jones Junior. The 9 hole Monastery Course opened in 1995 and was also designed by Robert Trent Jones Junior.
